Federal State Institution of Science Tobolsk complex scientific station of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (TCSS UrB RAS) created in accordance with the resolution of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences No. 167 dated May 25, 2004, as the Tobolsk biological station of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In accordance with the resolution No. 102 of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, dated May 10, 2011 was transferring to the Institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In accordance with the resolution of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences No. 246, dated November 22, 2011 was renaming to the Tobolsk complex scientific station of the Ural branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The station carries out fundamental, exploratory and applied research in the following areas:
- assessment of the state, the problem of conservation and monitoring of biodiversity of the Ob-Irtysh basin;
- assessment of the impact on biogeocenoses in the development of the West Siberian Arctic and Subarctic;
- scientific basis for the rational use and reproduction of biological resources;
- research and preservation of historical and cultural heritage of Siberia.
Research is carried out in accordance with the Program of fundamental scientific research of state academies of sciences for 2013-2020 in five areas: ecology of organisms and communities; biological diversity; a comprehensive study of ethnogenesis, ethnocultural image of peoples, modern ethnic processes, historical and cultural interaction in Russia and in the world; preservation and study of historical and cultural heritage: identification, systematization, scientific description, restoration and conservation; study of the evolution of man, societies and civilizations, man in history and the history of everyday life, traditions and innovations in social development, analysis of the relationship between authorities and society.
In the structure of the station, there are two scientific departments – environmental and humanitarian studies, as well as management and administrative units.
The environmental research department includes the group of ecology of the living organisms, the group of ecology of the aquatic organisms, and the chemical–environmental laboratory.
The humanitarian research department is representing by the group of the history of Siberian exploration, the group of ethno-archaeological research, and the Museum of the history of Siberian exploration and study named after A. A. Dunin-Gorkavich. Subsidiary units are the research library and the research building “Missiya”. The complex scientific station has eight laboratory buildings and five stationary observation points on the Tobol and Irtysh rivers.
The station is actively cooperating with the real sector of the economy. The closest interaction has been establishing with oil production, petrochemicals and energy companies among them: SIBUR Holding PJSC, Tyumenenergo, Surgutneftegaz PJSC, ZapSibNeftekhim LLC, RN-Uvatneftegaz LLC, InvestSibEco LLC and project institutes GPI and NII GA Aeroproject, Ligato, EnergoStroyproekt, NIPIGAZ.
Since 2018, the TCSS of the UB RAS has been included in the list of potential contractors of the NOVATEK LNG Arctic-2 project.
Research works are applied, diverse in nature and are often carrying out for the first time, having no analogues in the Russian Federation. Among them, executed in the interests of the Tyumen region and the real sector of the economy:
– carrying of rare and protected species of flora from the territory of the construction site of the «West Siberian Complex for the Deep Processing of Hydrocarbon Raw Materials» to a safe area with the necessary similar environmental conditions;
– creation and development of the first Russian project of ecological footpath in the area of construction of the complex “ZapSibNeftekhim”, located in proximity to the industrial area, where there is the establishment of production facilities world technological level and scale;
– In 2015, the station’s specialists developed a new environmental monitoring technique based on integrated observations in the background and monitoring areas. For the first time in the industrial history of Russia, an environmental monitoring project began at the stage of construction of a large industrial facility (ZapSibNeftekhim) and will continue after its commissioning;
– geobotanical survey and study of the wildlife in the projected routes of the 500 kV Tobol-Tyumen and 500 Nelym-Tobol high-voltage lines within the boundaries of the recreational zone of the state regional nature reserve «Abalaksky natural-historical complex», on the territory of the overhaul facility of the Turtas linear–production department of the “Gas main Komsomolskoye–Surgut–Chelyabinsk” within the boundaries of the state reserve of regional significance “Tobolsk mainland” (Tyumen region);
– a complex study of vegetation and wildlife in the construction area of an exploratory well in the territory of the state reserve of regional significance “Kunyaksky” (Uvat district);
– assessment of the habitat of the forest north reindeer population on the territory of the state reserve of regional significance “Kunyaksky”;
– state historical and cultural expertise of land plots subject to economic development;
– assessment of biological diversity at the construction site of the winter road and exploratory well No. 104 of the Verkhne-Lukmoyskoye oilfield (Uvat district);
– work on the formation of a list of measures to protect the environment and plant species of Red Book, preparation of an assessment of damage to rare plant species.
– preparation of the next edition of the Red Book of the Tyumen region.
